Joshua Brolly

BIOGRAPHY

Joshua Brolly is a Canadian Designer and Maker. After spending the better part of a decade in the Marketing and Management field, he was ready for a change. Risking everything he had spent years building, Joshua began his pursuit of Craft and Design. He studied Furniture - Craft and Design at Sheridan College, and graduated in 2016. At Sheridan, he learned the many nuances of design and fabrication, both past and present. Joshua still continues to learn and grow, his experience at Sheridan College created an amazing foundation for career as a Furniture Maker. During his time at Sheridan, Joshua found creative and rewarding situations with collaborative work. Lifelong bonds we also made. In order to continue the dynamic of collaborative projects with people he enjoyed working with, Joshua co-founded AA8 Studios. At AA8, Joshua works with other Sheridan graduates in order to design meaningful and thoughtful creations. There, he focuses on creating furniture, objects, and environments.

STATEMENT

I select materials that are local and sustainable. Efficient use of materials, minimal waste, and responsible design are important to me. I try to use natural processes, such as ebonizing and soap finishes, which have a lower impact on the environment over the lifespan of my piece.

My furniture often evokes a playful take on traditional forms, which leads to pieces that I hope are both delightful and intriguing to the user.  Contrast in colours and materials are common place in my explorations. Ultimately, my goal as a furniture designer is to create beautiful, simple, and functional pieces.
